DOUBLE CYLINDER

A cylinder is where the key is inserted. Some locks have two cylinders - a double cylinder lock. The most common is the double cylinder deadbolt, requiring a key to operate the lock from either side. Some security gate locks, mortise locks, and certain lock functions require two cylinders in a single lock - like a classroom intruder lock. The use of double cylinder locks is often limited by fire safety codes.
